It is vulnerable invite someone else into your world, see all your mud, and allow them to be a guide in your healing process.
Transparency of values is an important part of making the choice in who you want to do this work with.
So here are some of mine…
Values
Not every therapist is a fit for every person. There is no one modality that works for everyone. It’s helpful to be open to new practices and aware of the natural discomfort that comes from shifting old patterns, but listen to yourself when you hear a strong inner yes or no.
To co-create a therapeutic relationship that is generative and safe enough for healing to occur- it is essential to have trust, capacity and connection.
All parts of us have wisdom, a right to exist and take up space.
Much of what it means to be human and growing is to make peace with uncertainty and not knowing. And accepting that we will sometimes need to pick up the pieces, admit we were wrong, and do repair work in service of our collective existence.
Access to healing is unfortunately something that is affected by power and privilege. The mental health world is a participant in systems that have and still do harm folks who do not fit into the normative, white, cis-het, able-bodied, patriarchal, neurotypical paradigm of wellness and the wellness process. I am committed to approaching this work from an anti-oppressive and social justice-oriented lens while recognizing I will be a life-long student and I am responsible for my education in how to cause less harm.
Openness about what exists in the space in terms of power dynamics is essential to being in therapeutic relationship.
I am holding the reality that I am offering healing for pay which means being a part of the mental health industrial complex.
I am learning how to navigate what it means to offer healing modalities that come from and are influenced by many indigenous and global majority practices, be in a position of white privilege, and still do this work with integrity.
Laughter and not taking oneself too seriously is needed medicine along the journey of healing and co-creation of the therapeutic space.
We have a responsibility to care for ourselves and be attentive to the ripples that extend outward from us that affect humanity, living creatures, and our planet.
